Career prep · The flagship

So... how does getting a job actually work?

When I got to college, I had no clue what I was doing.

I didn’t know how to format a resume. I didn’t have a LinkedIn. I had never done a real interview. I didn’t know how to make the most of a coffee chat. And when I first saw recruiting timelines, I was honestly overwhelmed - and a little astonished that I was somehow supposed to already know all of this.

Over time, I figured it out. And then I spent years helping other students figure it out, too.

As a career coach at Michigan Ross, I worked with hundreds of students and peers on everything from resumes and networking to recruiting strategy and interviews. One thing I learned pretty quickly: there is no one recruiting process that works for everyone.

Some people need to completely rethink their resume. Some have applied to 30 internships and aren’t getting anywhere. Some have an interview next week and need to practice. Some don’t even know where to start.

That’s why I don’t start with a checklist. I start by getting to know you - what you want, where you are, what’s stressing you out, and what you actually need help with. Then we figure out the plan from there.

I genuinely love doing this work. Parents get someone who understands the recruiting process and the corporate world. Students get someone who has recently been in their shoes, speaks their language, and can help them actually figure out what to do next.
